Australia’s Rooftop Solar Milestone
Australia has reached a significant milestone in renewable energy, surpassing four million households with rooftop solar installations across the country. This achievement was announced by federal energy minister, Chris Bowen, highlighting the continuous growth and success of consumer-owned solar initiatives.
Bowen described this accomplishment as a product of Australian innovation, showcasing the nation’s leading position in solar panel installations per capita globally. With one in three Australian homes now equipped with solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, the country is set to add a record 3.15 gigawatts (GW) of new capacity this year, pushing the total capacity beyond 25 GW.
Shifting Energy Landscape
Rooftop solar systems have become a game-changer for Australian households, significantly reducing power bills by approximately $1,500 annually. As more homes transition to electric appliances and vehicles, solar energy can be stored and utilised for various purposes, transforming traditional consumption patterns.
Moreover, the rise of rooftop solar is reshaping the electricity grid, driving down wholesale power costs, empowering consumers, and phasing out conventional baseload fossil fuel generators.

Australia continues to set new records in rooftop solar generation, with instances like Western Australia achieving 80.5% solar contribution to the main grid and South Australia reaching a record 112.9% share of demand from rooftop solar.
Chris Bowen emphasised the popularity of rooftop solar among Australian homeowners, attributing the steady installation rate of around 300,000 systems annually to its cost-saving benefits. The milestone of four million solar installations symbolises the success of the government’s efforts to promote renewable energy as a reliable and affordable option for households.
Industry experts, including the Smart Energy Council and the Clean Energy Council, commended the dedication of installers and businesses driving the solar revolution in Australia.
