Malaysian developer Gentari poised to start work on first Australia project, a DC-coupled solar battery

Gentari’s First Australian Project: Maryvale Solar and Energy Storage

Gentari to Commence Work on First Australian Project

Gentari, a Malaysian renewable energy and storage developer linked to oil and gas giant Petronas, is gearing up to kick off its inaugural Australian venture, two years after venturing into the country with significant aspirations.

On Tuesday, Gentari revealed that it has given the green light for the 243-megawatt (MW) Maryvale solar project, along with its 172MW/408MWh battery energy storage system (BESS). Construction is scheduled to commence this month.

Key Step in Gentari’s Renewable Energy Endeavours

Gentari’s Chief Renewables Officer, Low Kian Min, expressed, “The Maryvale Solar and Energy Storage Project signifies a pivotal milestone in Gentari’s continuous endeavours.”

“This initiative plays a crucial role in our dedication to supporting New South Wales (NSW) and Australia in achieving their renewable energy targets,” added Low Kian Min.

Hybrid System Innovation at Maryvale Project

The Maryvale project, situated in the Central-West Orana renewable energy zone in NSW, stands out due to its innovative hybrid system. The solar farm and BESS will be DC-coupled and positioned behind the inverter, facilitating the smoothing and storage of electricity to mitigate any curtailment issues.

With a maximum export capacity of 172MW and the ability to import up to 91MW, the project is well-equipped to contribute to the energy landscape.

Strategic Partnerships and Future Plans

PCL Construction has been appointed to oversee the project’s construction, with Trinasolar and Contemporary Amperex Technology Australia (CATL) supplying the necessary equipment. Essential Energy serves as the local DNSP for the initiative.

As Gentari’s maiden project in Australia, the Maryvale endeavour follows the company’s acquisition of Wirsol Australia and its 422MW portfolio in 2023. Gentari set ambitious targets to amass 8 gigawatts (GW) of assets in Australia by 2030, positioning itself as a key player in the green hydrogen sector.

Expanding Portfolio and Future Prospects

Gentari currently manages eight solar farms and BESS projects along the east coast, with additional projects in the pipeline. Among these is the Barnawartha solar farm, boasting 88MW capacity and a 64MW/128MWh battery system.
