**NSW Encourages Households to Embrace Rooftop Solar and Double Savings with Energy Rebate Swap**
The NSW government has expanded its initiative to support low-income households by offering them the opportunity to swap their energy rebate for a free, fully installed 3kW rooftop solar system. The Rebate Swap For Solar offer, announced on Monday, allows eligible households to exchange a payment of $285 a year for long-term savings on their electricity bills of up to $600 a year, generated by the rooftop panels.
Since the announcement, over 2,500 households have already taken up the offer, with solar installers UPowr and LECA working alongside the government to supply and install the solar systems. NSW Energy Minister Penny Sharpe is encouraging more households to check their eligibility and apply.
Sharpe emphasizes that the Rebate Swap for Solar offer is a crucial part of the government’s plan to reduce the state’s carbon footprint as NSW transitions to a renewable energy-based Net Zero economy. She urges eligible households to apply immediately to enjoy the benefits of free solar and reduced energy bills.
Solar Citizens, a consumer and renewables advocacy group, welcomes the expanded offer, stating that it will extend the cost savings of solar to more low-income households in NSW. However, they believe that more can be done. The group highlights the importance of supporting batteries to help households use their solar energy during peak evening hours when energy prices are at their highest. This not only benefits individual households but also contributes to lowering costs for the energy grid as a whole.
