Tasmania’s New 288 MW Solar Farm
Tasmania, the island state, is on the brink of a significant transformation with the imminent arrival of its third large-scale solar farm. The George Town council recently granted planning approval for the 288 MW Cimitiere Plains solar project. This project, set to be established on cattle and sheep grazing land near the Bell Bay aluminium smelter, marks a substantial step towards embracing renewable energy in the region.
Developed by German-based company ib vogt, the Cimitiere Plains solar project joins two other major solar initiatives in Tasmania. The Connorville solar project, currently under construction, and the Weasel solar project and battery, which recently obtained approval from the federal environmental process, pave the way for a greener future in the state.
Sheep Grazing to Coexist with Solar Farm
One unique aspect of the Cimitiere Plains project is the integration of sheep grazing within the solar farm post-construction. ib vogt assures that sheep will continue to graze on the land, playing a vital role in maintaining the pasture. While the impact of solar farms on agricultural productivity remains a subject of limited research, it is anticipated that productivity may decrease by up to 30%, allowing at least 70% of productivity to be sustained.
To connect the solar farm to the nearest substation, a short 6 km transmission line will be required. This line will traverse approximately 5 km of forest, serving as a buffer zone for the Bell Bay aluminium smelter.
Significant Energy Production and Contribution
The Cimitiere solar farm is projected to generate approximately 620 GWh annually, boasting a capacity factor of around 25%. This output is expected to fulfil about 6% of Tasmania’s goal to achieve 200% renewable energy by 2040. Tasmania’s abundance of hydro-electric capacity complements solar energy, as solar production peaks during the summer months when hydro inflows are typically low.
With a track record of developing and constructing solar farms in New South Wales and Victoria, ib vogt has undertaken notable projects such as Kerang, Carisbrook, Dunedoo, Sebastopol, Yanco, Wunghnu, and Williamsdale. The Cimitiere Plains solar farm will stand as the company’s largest venture in Australia, further solidifying its commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
